Second Only to Istanbul
The Old Bazaar in Skopje is the second-largest Ottoman-era bazaar in Europe, surpassed only by the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. It has been the city's primary center for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century, reaching its peak during the Ottoman rule in the 15th to 17th centuries.
A Portal Through Time
The bazaar is connected to the modern Macedonia Square by the iconic Stone Bridge, built in the 15th century under Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Crossing this bridge is literally like walking from the 21st century directly into the 15th century—transitioning from giant, modern, neo-classical statues to narrow, winding cobblestone alleys.
The Ans
During the Ottoman era, the bazaar hosted several caravanserais where silk road merchants could rest. Three of these beautiful stone structures still stand today:
- Kuršumli An: Famous for its lead-capped domes, it served as an inn, then a prison, and is now used for cultural events due to its incredible acoustics.
- Suli An: Now houses the Faculty of Fine Arts.
- Kapan An: Today, its courtyard houses lively restaurants and cafes where you can drink traditional Turkish coffee.
Bathhouses Turned Art Galleries
The bazaar features two spectacular Ottoman hammams with multiple domes that have been repurposed:
- Daut Pasha Hammam: Built in the 15th century, it features 13 asymmetrical domes. Legend says it was never used as a bathhouse because a snake bit the daughter of the Daut Pasha on opening day. Today, it houses the National Gallery of Macedonia.
- Čifte Hammam: A double bathhouse (with separate wings for men and women), which now also serves as an art exhibition space.
The First Clock Tower in the Ottoman Empire
The Saat Kula, built in the mid-16th century, stands on a hill overlooking the bazaar. It is believed to be the very first clock tower built in the Ottoman Empire. Its purpose was to help merchants coordinate their business hours around the daily Muslim prayer times.
The High-Security Mall
In the heart of the bazaar lies the Bezisten, a covered market built in the 15th century. It was designed with thick stone walls and heavy iron gates that were locked at night to protect the most valuable goods—like silk, spices, jewels, and perfumes—from thieves and fires. It was rebuilt in the 19th century and still functions as a quiet shopping arcade today.
It Survived Earthquakes, Wars, and Fire
The bazaar has proven incredibly resilient. It survived a devastating fire started by Austrian General Piccolomini in 1689 (who burned the city to halt a cholera epidemic), heavy bombing in World War II, and the catastrophic 1963 Skopje earthquake which destroyed 80% of the city. While the modern city had to be completely rebuilt in a modernist/brutalist style, the low-rise, Ottoman-era bazaar was painstakingly restored to its original state.
A Culinary Haven
The bazaar is the culinary heart of Skopje. It is famous for:
- Skopski Kebapi: Small, grilled minced-meat sausages served with flatbread (teneke) and roasted hot peppers. The most famous spot is Destan, which has been operating since 1913.
- Tavče Gravče: Traditional Macedonian baked beans served in clay pots.
- Turkish Tea (Čaj): Served in small, tulip-shaped glasses. You will constantly see waiters darting through the alleys carrying trays of hot tea to shop owners.
