Macedonia Square
OVERVIEW
A politically debated public square where colossal statues and a historic palace meet a cultural bridge.
The Statue with a Secret Identity
The centerpiece of the square is a colossal, 22-meter-tall (72 ft) bronze statue of a warrior on a rearing horse, surrounded by fountain lions and soldiers. While everyone knows it depicts Alexander the Great, its official name is Warrior on a Horse. It was named anonymously to avoid provoking Greece during the decades-long naming dispute between the two countries. Following the 2018 Prespa Agreement, a plaque was added to the monument clarifying that it represents Alexander the Great as a figure of Hellenic history.
The Epicenter of Skopje 2014
If you visited the square before 2010, it looked like a typical, somewhat empty socialist-era plaza. Between 2010 and 2014, the government launched the highly controversial Skopje 2014 project. The square and surrounding areas were flooded with dozens of massive statues, neoclassical facades, and monuments. The project cost an estimated €80 to €500 million (in one of Europe’s poorest countries), leading locals to dub the square The Kitsch Capital of the Balkans.
The Palace That Survived the Great Earthquake
In 1963, a catastrophic 6.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed 80% of Skopje, including most of the square. However, the beautiful Ristić Palace (Ristikjeva Palata), built in 1926 on the corner of the square, miraculously survived without a scratch. It was one of the first buildings in the Balkans to feature a reinforced concrete structure, which saved it from collapse. Today, it stands as a rare pre-earthquake landmark.
The Birthplace of Mother Teresa is Feet Away
Mother Teresa (Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu) was born in Skopje in 1910. The actual house where she was born and lived once stood just a few meters from the square. Today, the spot is marked by a modest stone plaque on the pavement, and a spectacular, slightly eccentric Mother Teresa Memorial House is located just a short walk away.
It Connects Two Different Worlds
At the northern edge of the square lies the Stone Bridge (Kamen Most), built by the Ottomans in the 15th century. This bridge is not just a physical crossing over the Vardar River; it is a cultural portal. On the Macedonia Square side, you have the modern, European-style, predominantly Christian Macedonian city. Cross the bridge, and you instantly enter the Old Bazaar (Čaršija), a historic, Ottoman-era labyrinth of mosques, teahouses, and gold shops, predominantly inhabited by Muslim Albanians.
A Fountain That Plays Classical Music
The fountain surrounding the Warrior on a Horse statue is fully programmed. At night, it becomes a light and sound show, shooting water high into the air in sync with classical music (often featuring pieces by Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Mozart).
The Site of Independence
Macedonia Square is where modern North Macedonia was born. On September 8, 1991, the country’s first President, Kiro Gligorov, stood before a massive, ecstatic crowd in the square and declared the country's independence from Yugoslavia.
The Triumphal Arch
Just off the square stands the Porta Macedonia, a 21-meter-tall triumphal arch. Opened in 2012, it is covered in marble reliefs depicting scenes from Macedonian history, from antiquity to the modern day. It is highly controversial, with critics comparing it to Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, but on a much smaller and more modern budget.
Rebuilding the Lost History
Before the 1963 earthquake, the square was home to the grand Officer's Hall and the National Theatre. As part of the recent reconstruction efforts, the government decided to rebuild these collapsed historical buildings in their original locations around the square, blending the old with the new.
