OVERVIEW
A 16th-century Ottoman inn that once offered merchants free lodging and now hosts a stone museum and festivals.
Its name comes from a roof that no longer exists
The word Kurşun in Turkish means lead, and An (from the Persian khan) means inn. It was named "Lead Inn" because its spectacular domes were originally covered in heavy lead plates. However, during World War I, the lead was stripped off and melted down to make bullets and ammunition. Today, the roof is covered in clay tiles, but the name stuck.
It had a two-zone design to separate humans from animals
While many caravanserais were single-courtyard buildings, Kurshumli An is unique because it features two distinct courtyards. The First Courtyard was the luxury zone for the merchants. It featured a beautiful fountain (shadirvan) in the center, arcaded galleries, and 60 rooms spread over two floors. The ground floor was used for trading and storage, while the upper floor was for sleeping. The Second Courtyard was the stable area, which could hold up to 100 horses and camels, keeping the smell and noise of the animals away from the resting merchants.
It offered three days of free luxury
Kurshumli An was built as a vakıf (a charitable endowment) by Musein Odza, the son of a scientist in the court of Sultan Selim II. Under the Ottoman system, traveling merchants—regardless of their religion or nationality—could stay at the inn for three days for free. This included lodging, security, and food for both the merchants and their animals, all designed to boost trade in Skopje.
It transitioned from a luxury hotel to a notorious prison
As the Ottoman Empire began to decline in the late 19th century, the inn lost its merchant clientele. In 1878, the Ottoman authorities converted Kurshumli An into a high-security prison. It became infamous for housing Macedonian revolutionaries and rebels fighting for independence from the Ottoman Empire.
It is a survivor of the 1963 earthquake
In 1963, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed about 80% of Skopje. While many historic buildings were completely flattened, Kurshumli An survived, though it suffered significant damage. Its survival is credited to its brilliant architecture—alternating layers of stone and brick with thick, sturdy columns that absorbed the seismic shocks. It was meticulously restored to its original look in the years following the disaster.
It houses a stone museum (Lapidarium)
Today, Kurshumli An is managed by the Museum of North Macedonia. Its ground-floor rooms and courtyard serve as a Lapidarium—an outdoor museum of ancient stone monuments. Visitors walking through the courtyard can see Roman gravestones, ancient stone inscriptions, and sarcophagi dating back to the Roman province of Macedonia Salutaris.
It is a hub for modern alternative culture
While it is hundreds of years old, Kurshumli An is highly active today. Because of its enclosed stone structure, it has incredible acoustics. It regularly hosts:
- MakeDox: A popular international creative documentary film festival where films are projected onto the ancient stone walls under the night sky.
- Skopje Summer Festival: Concerts, theatrical plays, and art exhibitions.
It was designed to keep out the summer heat
If you visit Skopje in the summer, the temperature can easily exceed 40°C (104°F). However, stepping inside Kurshumli An offers instant relief. The building was constructed using thick stone walls and deep arcades that create natural shade and airflow, acting as an ancient form of air conditioning.
