Why It is Not Officially Named Alexander the Great
To avoid provoking a diplomatic crisis with neighboring Greece, the government of North Macedonia officially named the monument Warrior on a Horse (Воин на коњ). Greece has long claimed Alexander the Great as an exclusive part of its own ancient Hellenic heritage. By omitting Alexander’s name, Macedonia attempted to bypass Greek objections—though the disguise fooled no one.
It Now Has a Disclaimer Plaque
Following the historic Prespa Agreement in 2018 (which resolved the decades-long naming dispute between Greece and North Macedonia), the Macedonian government agreed to add plaques to several monuments. In 2019, a plaque was installed at the base of the statue stating that the monument represents a figure of Hellenic history and is part of the world's cultural heritage, clarifying that it does not represent the heritage of modern-day North Macedonia.
It is Absolutely Colossal
The monument is a towering presence in Skopje’s Macedonia Square:
- The Bronze Statue: Stands at 14.5 meters (47.5 feet) tall.
- The Concrete Pedestal: Is 10 meters (33 feet) tall.
- Total Height: 24.5 meters (80 feet), making it roughly as tall as an 8-story building.
- Weight: The bronze statue alone weighs approximately 30 tons.
It Was Cast in Italy
Despite being a symbol of Macedonian national identity, the statue was not made in Macedonia. It was sculpted by Valentina Stevanovska and cast in bronze at the famous Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry in Florence, Italy, before being shipped to Skopje in pieces and assembled on-site.
It is a Multi-Sensory Musical Fountain
The statue sits atop a massive, elaborate fountain. It is not just a visual attraction; it is a musical and light show. At scheduled times, the fountain shoots water high into the air in synchronization with classical music (like Carl Orff's Carmina Burana) and Macedonian instrumental tracks, accompanied by a vibrant, color-changing light show.
It Cost a Fortune
The statue was the centerpiece of Skopje 2014, a massive, highly controversial government-funded project aimed at giving the capital a more classical, monumental look. The Warrior on a Horse fountain and statue reportedly cost around €7.5 million (over $8 million USD), making it one of the most expensive pieces of public art in Europe relative to the country's GDP.
The Pedestal Tells Alexander's Life Story
If you look closely at the 10-meter pedestal, it is covered in highly detailed bronze reliefs. These reliefs depict scenes from Alexander’s life and military campaigns, including:
- The Battle of Gaugamela (where he defeated the Persian King Darius III).
- Alexander taming his legendary horse, Bucephalus.
- His mother, Olympias, and his father, Philip II of Macedon (whose own massive statue stands nearby, across the Stone Bridge).
It is Guarded by Bronze Lions
The base of the fountain is surrounded by eight large bronze lions, which act as guardians of the monument. Four of the lions face the fountain, while the other four act as water-spouts, shooting water into the basin.
It Divides Local Opinion
While tourists flock to the square to take photos of the spectacular monument, locals are deeply divided. Some view it as a proud symbol of national identity and a great tourist draw. Others view it as a kitschy, nationalistic project that wasted millions of euros of taxpayers' money that could have been spent on schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.
