The name Kaj Serdarot translates to "At the Serdar's." Serdar is a historical military rank of Ottoman origin, meaning commander or general. In Macedonian history and literature, a serdar is often depicted as a heroic protector of the people. The name sets the tone for the restaurant, which pays homage to Macedonian history, epic poetry, and traditional folklore.

Kaj Serdarot is tucked away in the cobblestone labyrinth of the Skopje Old Bazaar, which is the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside of Istanbul. The restaurant is located near historic landmarks like the Kuršumli An (a 16th-century Ottoman inn) and the Museum of Macedonia.
