It is Housed in the Oldest Preserved House in Skopje
The restaurant operates inside a house built in 1836. It is officially recognized as the oldest fully preserved traditional house in Skopje. Stepping inside is literally like stepping back into the Ottoman-era Balkans of the 19th century.
It Miraculously Survived the 1963 Earthquake
In 1963, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed over 80% of Skopje, wiping out most of its historic buildings. The Old House survived almost entirely intact. This is largely attributed to the traditional building techniques of the time, which used flexible chestnut wood beams interwoven with stone and mud, allowing the structure to bend rather than break during seismic activity.
It is a Protected Cultural Monument
Because of its architectural and historical value, the building is protected by the Macedonian Ministry of Culture as a monument of national heritage. The owners have meticulously preserved the original structure, including the wooden ceilings, stone walls, and the iconic Čardak (a traditional covered wooden balcony).
It Doubles as an Ethnological Museum
The interior of the restaurant is decorated with authentic 19th-century Macedonian artifacts. As you dine, you are surrounded by antique copper pots, traditional hand-woven carpets (kilims), old musical instruments, historical photographs, and traditional national costumes.
Guardians of Slow Food and Ancient Recipes
The restaurant is a champion of the Slow Food movement in Macedonia. The menu features recipes that have been passed down through generations. Some of their specialties are still cooked in traditional clay pots (grne) over open fires or in a wood-fired brick oven. Must-try: Their Tavče Gravče (traditional baked beans in a clay dish) and their homemade bread, served hot out of the oven with Ajvar (roasted red pepper relish).
The Ritual of Rakija and Čokanče
At Old House, starting a meal is a ritual. Guests are traditionally welcomed with homemade Rakija (grape or plum brandy) served in a čokanče—a traditional, miniature glass flask. It is customary to pair this with a Shopska or Macedonian salad.
The Sound of Starogradska Music
To complete the time-travel experience, the restaurant hosts live musicians playing Starogradska muzika (traditional old town acoustic music). Musicians stroll between tables playing the violin, accordion, and tambourine, singing melancholic and joyful Macedonian folk ballads.
The Go-To Spot for Diplomats and Celebrities
Because it represents the absolute pinnacle of Macedonian hospitality (gostoprimstvo), Old House is the unofficial venue for hosting foreign dignitaries, ambassadors, and international celebrities visiting Skopje. If a foreign president or famous actor is in town, there is a very high chance they will be taken to Old House to experience authentic Macedonian culture.
A Hidden Oasis in a Modernizing City
While Skopje has undergone massive architectural changes and modernization (especially through the Skopje 2014 project), Old House remains an authentic, untouched oasis of peace. Located just a short walk from the modern city center, entering its courtyard feels like crossing a portal into a quieter, slower era of history.
