OVERVIEW

Multi-story cultural venue that includes coworking, restaurant, design shop, gallery & hidden rooftop.

It is a Swiss Army Knife of Creative Spaces

Public Room is a hybrid space that defies easy categorization. Within its multi-story industrial building, you will find:

  • A chic restaurant and bar.
  • A co-working space for freelancers and startups.
  • A design shop showcasing local artisans.
  • An exhibition gallery.
  • A conference hall and workshop spaces.
  • A dedicated children's creative center.

Born from the Skopje Design Week

Public Room was founded by the same team behind Skopje Design Week (one of the city's most important annual cultural events). The founders wanted to create a permanent, 365-day-a-year physical space to sustain the creative energy of the design week, giving local designers, artists, and entrepreneurs a year-round home to showcase and sell their work.

Housed in a Revitalized Industrial Building

The venue is located in a former industrial/administrative building near the center of Skopje. Instead of tearing it down, the founders used adaptive reuse to transform the space. It features an industrial-chic aesthetic with exposed brick, raw concrete, high ceilings, and large windows, blended with warm wooden furniture and lush green plants. It set a trend in Skopje for turning old industrial spaces into hip cultural hubs.

A Champion of Slow Food and Local Farmers

Public Room is a strong advocate for the local economy and sustainable gastronomy. Their menu focuses on the farm-to-table concept, sourcing ingredients almost exclusively from small, independent Macedonian farmers. They serve traditional Balkan flavors with a modern, international twist, and they are famous for their craft beers and local Macedonian wines.

It is a Social Enterprise

Unlike standard commercial bars, Public Room operates as a social enterprise. A portion of their profits is reinvested into supporting young Macedonian creatives, funding cultural projects, and organizing educational workshops. They also focus on social inclusion, frequently running programs that employ or train marginalized groups.

The Kids' Attic is Actually Cool

While many cafes have a basic corner with a few plastic toys, Public Room dedicated an entire upper floor to children. Known as the Kids' Attic (Detski Tavan), it is a beautifully designed, eco-friendly space where children engage in creative workshops, cooking classes, clay modeling, and intellectual games rather than just staring at screens.

The Epicenter of Skopje’s Alternative Nightlife

If you want to escape the commercial pop and turbo-folk music that dominates many Balkan venues, Public Room is the place to go. It is famous for hosting:

  • Intimate jazz and blues concerts.
  • Vinyl-only DJ sets.
  • Stand-up comedy nights.
  • Open-mic poetry slams.

A Hidden Green Rooftop

In the hot Skopje summers, Public Room’s rooftop terrace is one of the city's best-kept secrets. Surrounded by herbs, plants, and wooden decking, it offers a breezy, relaxed escape from the city concrete, perfect for daytime working or evening cocktails.
