It was Born from the Ashes of a Tragedy
The museum owes its existence to one of the most devastating events in the city’s history. On July 26, 1963, a massive earthquake destroyed over 80% of Skopje, killing over 1,000 people. In the aftermath, the International Association of Art (IAA) called upon artists worldwide to donate works of art to help rebuild the cultural life of the city. The response was overwhelming, and the museum was founded in 1964 to house these gifts.
It is Known as the Museum of Solidarity
Because almost its entire founding collection was donated by international artists, governments, and galleries, MoCA Skopje is widely referred to as the Museum of Solidarity. It stands as a unique monument to a time when the world—divided by the Cold War—united to help a city in need. Works came from both the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc.
It Houses an Original Picasso (with a Great Backstory)
One of the museum’s most prized possessions is Head of a Woman (Glavata na zhena), painted and donated by Pablo Picasso himself. When Picasso heard about the tragedy in Skopje, he personally chose to donate this painting to the city. For decades, it was one of the few original Picassos on permanent display in the Balkans.
The Collection is a Who's Who of 20th-Century Art
Despite being in a relatively small Balkan capital, MoCA Skopje boasts a collection that rival major Western museums. Artists who donated their works include:
- Alexander Calder (who donated one of his famous mobiles)
- Victor Vasarely (the father of Op-Art)
- Jasper Johns
- David Hockney
- Niki de Saint Phalle
- Pierre Soulages
- Sol LeWitt
It was a Gift from Poland
The building itself was a gift. Following the earthquake, the Polish government funded a competition to design the new museum. It was won by the prominent Polish architectural team known as "The Tigers" (Wacław Kłyszewski, Jerzy Mokrzyński, and Eugeniusz Wierzbicki). Completed in 1970, the building is a masterpiece of late Modernist/Brutalist architecture, characterized by its clean geometric lines, white concrete, and large glass facades.
It Sits on a Strategic, Scenic Hill
The museum is located on the historic Kale Hill, right next to the medieval Skopje Fortress. Because of this elevated position, the museum offers some of the best panoramic views of the city of Skopje, the Vardar River, and Mount Vodno. The architects designed the building so that the natural landscape and the city below act as a backdrop to the art inside.
The Architecture Blends Indoor and Outdoor Space
The Polish architects designed the museum with the concept of fluid space. Huge glass walls allow natural light to flood the exhibition halls, and the indoor galleries flow seamlessly into an outdoor sculpture garden. This was highly innovative for museum design in the late 1960s.
It Jumpstarted the Macedonian Contemporary Art Scene
Before the museum was built, Macedonian artists had very limited exposure to international modern art movements. The opening of MoCA, with its influx of global avant-garde art, acted as a massive catalyst. It inspired a generation of local Macedonian artists, such as Petar Mazev and Dušan Perčinkov, who went on to create highly influential works of their own.
It Recently Went Through a Major Revival
For a period after the breakup of Yugoslavia, the museum fell into a state of neglect due to economic struggles. However, in recent years, it has undergone significant restoration. Today, it is once again a vibrant cultural hub, hosting cutting-edge temporary exhibitions, film screenings, and lectures, bridging the gap between Skopje's historic past and its creative future.
