The Name is a Tribute to Cinema
The word Kotur (Котур) in Macedonian translates to reel (as in a film reel). This name was chosen because the venue was founded by a group of film enthusiasts and filmmakers who wanted to merge their love for cinematography with Skopje’s café culture.
It Houses a Micro-Cinema
Kotur is not just cinema-themed; it is an actual functioning cinema. Inside, there is a cozy, dedicated micro-cinema room equipped with a projector and vintage theater seats. They regularly screen independent films, cult classics, documentaries, and short films, often followed by discussions with directors and screenwriters.
Located in a Charming, Hidden Old House
Instead of being located in a modern commercial building, Kotur is housed in a renovated, old-style Skopje family home tucked away in a quiet alley near the city center (close to the former Kino Kultura). It has a beautiful, leafy backyard garden that feels like a secret oasis, shielding visitors from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Yugoslav Retro Aesthetics
The interior of Kotur is a nostalgic trip back in time. It is decorated with mismatched vintage mid-century modern furniture, retro Yugoslavian-era posters, old film projectors, analog cameras, and shelves stacked with books and vinyl records. Many of the items were salvaged, donated, or bought at flea markets, giving the place a cozy, living-room feel.
It Revived the Bife Culture
In socialist Yugoslavia, a bife (buffet) was a casual neighborhood spot where people gathered for quick drinks, simple food, and intense political or artistic debates. Kotur proudly calls itself a Cultural Buffet, reviving this tradition for the 21st century. They serve excellent local craft beers, signature cocktails, and a fusion of traditional Macedonian meze (tapas) with modern twists.
The Epicenter of Skopje’s Alternative Scene
On any given night, Kotur hosts a variety of cultural events. It is famous for:
- Vinyl DJ Nights: Local and international DJs spinning actual vinyl records.
- Jazz and Acoustic Sessions: Live performances by local underground musicians.
- The Kolaž (Collage) Markets: Flea markets and bazaars supporting local craftspeople, vintage clothing sellers, and artists.
- Book Promotions and Poetry Slams: A platform for young, emerging Macedonian writers.
A Community-Driven Space
What makes Kotur truly special is its community. It serves as an informal co-working space during the day for freelancers, writers, and designers, and transforms into a lively social hub by night. It is widely regarded as one of the most inclusive, LGBTQ+-friendly, and progressive spaces in Skopje.
If you visit, try their homemade pinđur (a traditional pepper and eggplant relish) with warm bread, pair it with a local Macedonian craft beer, and check their blackboard near the entrance to see what film is playing that evening!
